![]() Written in verse, this debut novel is hauntingly romantic, refusing to be rushed or put down without deep contemplation of what it means to accept the tragedies of our lives and to reckon with the ways we metamorphosize as a result of them. Readers will be consumed by the weight of McBride’s intentionality from road trip stops to the nuance of everything that goes unsaid. Though the traditions are distinct on their own, McBride artfully weaves Black Southern hoodoo traditions with those of the Navajo/Diné people, creating a beautiful and cross-cultural reverence for the earth, its inhabitants, and our ancestors. ![]() But when they reach Sani’s motherland, the tribal lands of the Navajo Nation, a shocking yet obvious revelation rears its head. Together, the two steal away on a summer road trip, sharing the dreams they keep hidden and the spiritual practices they have in common. Though no one else seems to pay Moth any attention, Sani sees her for what she is-beautiful, broken, and yet still so worthy of life’s offerings. But then she meets Sani, a half Navajo, half white boy with hair like a waterfall, struggling with a broken family, suppressed desires, and his mental health. ![]() ![]() Moth lost her entire family in a car crash last summer, leaving her feeling invisible and unwanted in her aunt’s home. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After 15 years spent in the public eye, Chang has transcended his place in the so-called “bad boy” chef generation, and is now a leader in the restaurant industry. He’s now attached to some 15 restaurants spanning NYC to Toronto to Sydney (not counting his growing Fuku fried chicken enterprise), is the figurehead of a media and entertainment company, and, thanks in part to well-reviewed shows on PBS and Netflix, has become a recognizable public figure, even among those who have never eaten his food. In 2004, Momofuku Noodle Bar, a ramen joint in NYC’s East Village, ushered in a style of restaurant that’s now recognizable everywhere: food that emphasized “what cooks really wanted to eat” with little regard for existing conventions unabashed loudness and a maniacal attention to detail and deliciousness, perhaps best encapsulated in its signature dish, a pork-belly bun that would be imitated across the country.Īlong with Momofuku’s rise has come Chang’s own. So how does one review a book like this, one that hits so close to home that it literally could be your own story? The words I’d use to describe Flowers from the Storm are amazing, incredible, and heartwarming, compelling, complex, gut wrenching, joyous, painful, comforting… such contrasting words and emotions that it would take pages and pages to explain why it all means so much to me and frankly, I just don’t have that in me when it comes to this story. And wow, when I say that out loud, I realize how strange it sounds. And, as odd as it might sound, I find that I’m very protective of Christian, worried about revealing too much of his story. ![]() Well, I didn’t have to try hard at all with this story, and no matter how many times I’ve attempted to write this review, I find myself in tears. ![]() With any book I read, I hope to connect with the hero and heroine, to feel what it is the author is trying to convey. My review is a cheesy, rambling, hot mess, so read at your own risk. I'm going to start with a warning - this is probably the worse review I've ever written because of how deeply, how emotionally I connected with the hero. ![]() ![]() ![]() Their efforts to thwart the wicked plot of the evil witch Mombi and the revolt of the women of Oz. ![]() Wogglebug, T.E., and the wooden Sawhorse. ![]() Along the way he meets up with our old friends the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman as well as new friends like Jack Pumpkinhead, H.M.
